We are proud to say that Sunada is the first ever magazine on Music, Music Therapy and more. We are happy that we are making slow but steady progress with readers appreciating the content. In this issue we are concluding the Origin of Ragas series. While it is good to provide a technical background of music, it is also a good idea to make technology popular by giving it in capsules that are at once palatable and easy to appreciate.

It is very encouraging to receive responses from various parts of the world and from people belonging to various professions. We are happy about making a lot of progress in increasing our readership. This issue covers the versatility of Raga Shankarabharanam also known as Bilaval in Hindustani Music. It is a matter of interest that the notes of this Raga are also a part of the western music and known as Major Notes. The western music does not have this system of complete Ragas based on notes. In the past few months the Sunada team has been trying to dig into the past and see how the frequencies of the brain waves can be matched to the frequencies of various musical notes. The idea was to see how the brain waves which when recorded during an ailment can be brought back to their normal levels with music therapy, using suitable compositions to various patients. The reason being, what is melody for one can cause a malady for another. Music is completely subjective and enjoyed best at individual levels. We are trying to establish the relationship between musical frequencies and the brain wave frequencies. This issue deals with the Fibonacci numbers and how this ratio is present in the musical notes and their various frequencies. A lot of material had to be researched through the internet and put together in a relevant manner. Happy reading…

In the last few issues the Sunada has tried to understand how music therapy began in the west. This month, we are introducing a new feature by the name “Nectar to the Mind”. In this, books written by great writers of yester years. “Chitta Bodhamrutam” is a set of poems written on Rama, by Late Bhavaraju Bapiraju in chaste Telugu. I have made an attempt to translate these little known poems with the idea of popularising and want everyone to enjoy the essence of these. As always we are covering some very talented people who are doing some excellent work in the area of music in various capacities. This time we have put up a write – up about a musician from Air Force and one can see how music knows no boundaries.

Hope this second poem from “Chittabodhamrutam” will have a cooling effect on the minds. It is my good fortune that I am getting to know some very young and dedicated doctors of India, who are not practicing for making money, but to offer some solace to the elderly through various methods. We are introducing Dr. Vivek Bhavaraju, a very highly qualified Medical Doctor of repute who is doing yeomen service to the society by taking care of the elderly citizens from his organization by the name Naimisha.

Although somewhat useful on certain occasions, we discuss why it is mostly unsuitable as therapy. A young Mridangam player has taken upon himself the burden of carrying the mantel of his father’s legacy and through his own efforts established Rudraksham which teaches students Mridangam and other percussion instruments. Team Sunada is also very proud to introduce a new feature in which we are publishing poetry written by amateur writers. It is just not some poetry, but it is about Music. Happy reading…

Questions frequently asked when we talk about music therapy and how it alters the state of mind, are about the different states of mind. In this issue we are discussing about how Music Therapy is administered. We are also giving some examples of how some astrological placements of certain planets determines whether one becomes a singer or a writer. “I see music all around me. It is in Mother Nature. I found music where ever I traveled the world path. I have learned to live in different cultures although we could not understand each other. But we understood each other. That is because music speaks the language of the soul and emotions.”

Its Deepawali time and the noise of crackers and festivities is very much in the air. Beg your pardon….no noise of fire crackers this year. Yet, having put up with the tremendous noise pollution till now, the absence of Noise has a strange effect. For those who believe that Goddess Lakshmi has to be ushered in by bursting fire crackers, it must feel like blasphemy. But it is not so. A community event for fire works display similar to Dussera should be fun. It would be interesting to see our readers’reactions to this issue.

February somehow, always feels short and sweet, despite the fact that it is smaller only two days than the normal months. However, it is very power packed and here are some articles to prove it. It is short and strong and yet meaningful. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever” said John Keats. A thing is considered as beautiful only when a harmonious combination is present in its entirety. It goes without saying that music is definitely a product of notes arranged in harmony. It is a distinct probability that the Greek Gurus gained their knowledge of the philosophic and therapeutic aspects of music from the Egyptians”. Research about the origin of Music as Therapy shows that the ancient Greek Philosopher and Mathematician Pythagoras indeed the first one to use Music for Therapeutic purposes.

A great poet once said “if winter is here, can spring be far behind?” Indeed spring is here in all its vivacious and vibrant colours. There is some unexpressed happiness in everyone’s faces. The very clichéd but beautiful expression that spring brings with it all new hopes and widens our horizons. Recognizing this mood at the time of these new beginnings, we will be talking about the effect of Lullabies on babies and children. Whenever I ask anyone about what Raga appeals most, pat comes the reply that Mohana Raga is most pleasant and appealing. Here we are presenting some more facts which will give a better insight into this Ragam which will help us to explore the reasons for this effect in a more scientific manner in our later issues taking into account the frequencies of the notes used in this Raga.
